Rhizomes—particularly those of certain plants such as ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa)—have been used in traditional medicine systems for centuries to help prevent and alleviate symptoms of the common cold. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ginger rhizome is a well-known remedy, believed to "dispel cold" and "release the exterior," which refers to its use in early stages of colds with chills, headache, and nasal congestion. Similarly, Ayurvedic medicine uses ginger to support immune health and digestion, both considered important for resistance to infectious diseases.

The rationale behind these traditional uses is largely based on the warming, stimulating, and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to rhizomes. While modern scientific studies are limited and results are variable, some in vitro and animal studies indicate that compounds found in ginger and turmeric (such as gingerol and curcumin) possess anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically contribute to immune support. However, robust clinical trials specifically evaluating the preventive effects of rhizomes against colds in humans are lacking. As a result, most recommendations for rhizome use in cold prevention rely primarily on historical and ethnobotanical evidence rather than strong scientific validation. In summary, rhizomes are traditionally used for cold prevention, with modest supportive evidence, but high-quality clinical data are sparse.
