Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Artemisia herba-alba (commonly known as white wormwood) has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in North Africa and the Middle East, for treating various ailments including colds with fever. Folk medicine practitioners have employed infusions and decoctions of its aerial parts as remedies for symptoms such as cough, fever, and congestion. The rationale for these uses is generally rooted in the plant’s perceived antimicrobial, diaphoretic (sweat-inducing), and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to support the body’s natural defense mechanisms during episodes of respiratory infection.

Scientific research into Artemisia herba-alba has identified several bioactive compounds, such as essential oils (including camphor, thujone, and cineole) and flavonoids, that possess antimicrobial and mild anti-inflammatory properties in vitro. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for treating colds with fever in humans is lacking. Most available studies are either laboratory-based or conducted on animal models and do not specifically address its effects on colds or viral infections. Therefore, while traditional usage is well-documented, scientific validation remains limited, and its effectiveness for this specific indication should be regarded as unproven pending further research.
