Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bee products, such as honey and propolis, have been traditionally used in many cultures to help alleviate symptoms of colds, including those with fever. Honey, in particular, has a long history of use as a soothing agent for sore throat and cough, both common symptoms of colds. Propolis, a resinous mixture produced by bees, has also been employed in folk medicine due to its perceived antimicrobial properties. While some laboratory and small-scale clinical studies suggest that honey can reduce cough frequency and severity in children, evidence for its effectiveness in treating the broader spectrum of cold symptoms, especially those accompanied by fever, is limited. Propolis has demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro, but robust clinical data supporting its benefit for colds is lacking. The World Health Organization and other health authorities acknowledge honey's traditional use but stop short of recommending it as a primary therapy for colds. Therefore, the use of bee products for colds with fever is primarily grounded in tradition, with limited scientific validation.
