Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as "Bibhitaki" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems of India. It is one of the three fruits in the Ayurvedic formulation Triphala. Historically, Belleric myrobalan has been used to address respiratory conditions, including coughs, sore throats, and colds, especially those accompanied by fever. Classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita describe its use for balancing bodily "doshas" and alleviating symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

From a scientific standpoint, there is very limited direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for treating colds with fever. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Terminalia bellirica possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically help in managing colds. However, these studies are preliminary, and robust human trials are lacking.

In summary, the use of Belleric myrobalan for colds with fever is primarily justified by traditional use, with historical documentation supporting its application for such symptoms. Current scientific evidence is not sufficient to firmly validate this use, so the evidence rating is 2 (some traditional and preclinical support, but lacking strong clinical data).
