Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bur-Reed (Sparganium stoloniferum) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), often referred to as "San Leng." Its traditional uses mainly center on promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and alleviating pain, especially in gynecological disorders and abdominal masses. There is little to no documentation in the TCM classical texts or modern herbal monographs that specifically supports the use of Bur-Reed to treat colds with fever. Its inclusion in any remedy for colds or fever is not supported by well-established tradition, but it may appear in some formulae due to its general circulation-promoting properties. Scientific studies on Bur-Reed are limited, and there is no clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for upper respiratory tract infections, fever, or symptoms of the common cold. Therefore, the use of Bur-Reed for colds with fever is justified, at best, by tangential traditional rationale rather than direct historical or scientific evidence. The rating reflects the lack of strong traditional or scientific support for this specific use.
