Evidence supporting the use of: Cambodium Cardamom
For the health condition: Colds (with fever)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cambodian Cardamom (Amomum spp., especially Amomum kravanh) has been traditionally used in Southeast Asian and some traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines for treating respiratory conditions, including colds with fever. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys indicate its inclusion in herbal remedies intended to alleviate symptoms such as congestion, cough, and mild fever. The rationale is based on cardamom’s aromatic and warming properties, which are believed to help clear phlegm and promote sweating (diaphoresis), thereby reducing fever. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting these specific effects. Most modern research on cardamom focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but these studies are generally conducted in vitro or in animal models and do not specifically address its efficacy for treating colds with fever in humans. Thus, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is lacking, and clinical trials are absent. The evidence supporting its use is therefore rated as a 2, reflecting a strong traditional basis but little to no robust clinical data.
