Capillary Artemisia (Artemisia capillaris), known as "Yin Chen Hao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. It is not mainly used as a primary remedy for colds, but it is included in some traditional formulas for febrile diseases, especially those that involve damp-heat and high fever. The classical text "Shang Han Lun" (Treatise on Cold Damage) describes formulas such as "Yin Chen Hao Tang" where Capillary Artemisia is used, primarily for jaundice with fever, but by extension, sometimes for colds with fever, especially when there are signs of heat and dampness (e.g., yellow tongue coating, heavy sensation). The herb is understood in TCM to clear heat and resolve dampness, which can be a component of certain febrile illnesses.
Although there is limited modern clinical research directly focused on the use of Capillary Artemisia for common colds with fever, its traditional indications for clearing heat and managing fever are well documented in historical materia medica. Animal and laboratory studies have shown that Artemisia capillaris has anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and mild antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects, which may offer some mechanistic support for its traditional applications. However, these studies are not sufficient to fully validate its use for viral upper respiratory infections in humans. Thus, its rating is based on robust traditional use with partial scientific plausibility, but not direct clinical evidence for treating colds with fever.
