Evidence supporting the use of: Cloves
For the health condition: Colds (with fever)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for managing symptoms associated with colds and fevers. Traditionally, cloves are believed to have warming, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to help relieve sore throat, cough, and other symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. Preparations may include clove-infused teas or decoctions, sometimes combined with honey or other herbs.
Scientific studies have identified that clove contains eugenol and other bioactive compounds with demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. These findings suggest a plausible mechanism by which cloves might influence infectious or inflammatory conditions. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of cloves specifically for colds with fever is limited to absent. Most available research focuses on isolated compounds or topical/oral use for dental pain and not on cold or flu treatment in humans.
Therefore, while the use of cloves for colds (with fever) is well-rooted in traditional practices and supported by plausible biological activity, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Its use for this condition is thus primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific validation.
