Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dragonhead (often referring to Dracocephalum species such as Dracocephalum moldavica) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia and Eastern Europe, for the treatment of colds and related febrile illnesses. Traditional herbal texts describe the plant as possessing "cooling" properties, which were believed to help reduce fever and soothe symptoms of respiratory infections. The herb has been utilized as an infusion or decoction for ailments such as sore throats, coughs, and mild fevers, sometimes in combination with other medicinal plants.

Modern scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified the presence of flavonoids, essential oils, and other phytochemicals in Dracocephalum species that show mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. However, robust clinical trials or high-quality human studies directly supporting the effectiveness of Dragonhead for treating colds with fever are lacking. Therefore, while its use is rooted in traditional medicine, current scientific evidence is insufficient to strongly support these claims.
