Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Galanga (Alpinia galanga), also known as greater galangal, is traditionally used in several Asian medicinal systems to help alleviate symptoms of colds, especially those accompanied by fever. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, galanga is believed to have warming properties, which are thought to help "dispel cold" and support recovery from upper respiratory tract infections. The rhizome is often included in herbal formulations for its purported ability to stimulate circulation, reduce phlegm, and promote sweating, which is considered beneficial in managing fever and chills associated with colds.

Scientific evidence supporting the use of galanga specifically for treating colds with fever remains limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that galanga extracts possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mild immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically contribute to alleviating symptoms of respiratory infections. However, these effects have not been conclusively demonstrated in human clinical trials directly targeting the common cold or fever. The majority of available data comes from in vitro or animal studies, and there is a lack of rigorous, large-scale clinical research assessing galanga's efficacy for this particular indication. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is minimal at this time.
