Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Hemp (Cannabis sativa), particularly in the form of hemp seeds or hemp oil, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, hemp seeds ("huo ma ren") have been used primarily as a mild laxative and to support general health, but there are some records of their use in herbal formulas for fevers and colds, often in combination with other herbs. However, the rationale for their use in these cases is not well-defined, and hemp is not considered a primary or major treatment for colds with fever in traditional herbal practice. The use of hemp or its derivatives to directly treat fever or cold symptoms is not supported by robust clinical or pharmacological studies. Scientific research on hemp has largely focused on its nutritional content, potential anti-inflammatory properties, and, in the case of cannabinoids, applications in pain, epilepsy, and other chronic conditions—not acute viral infections like the common cold. Therefore, while there is some historical precedent in traditional medicine, the use of hemp to support or treat colds with fever is not strongly validated by either traditional practice or modern science, and the evidence supporting its efficacy in this context is weak.
