Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mushrooms have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, for supporting immune function and treating respiratory illnesses, including colds with fever. Species such as shiitake (Lentinula edodes), maitake (Grifola frondosa), and reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) are most commonly cited for their health-promoting properties. In Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine, mushrooms are believed to restore balance and improve “Qi,” being recommended for a range of ailments, including infections and feverish colds. The choice of mushroom and preparation method varies widely, and often they are combined with other herbs in decoctions or soups. Modern scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of mushrooms (unspecified) for treating colds with fever is limited and inconclusive. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest certain mushrooms may have immunomodulatory effects, possibly enhancing the body’s defense against infections. Beta-glucans and other substances found in mushrooms may stimulate immune cells. However, there is a lack of robust, large-scale human clinical trials directly demonstrating that unspecified mushrooms reduce duration or severity of colds accompanied by fever. Therefore, while the traditional use is strong and supported by historical records, direct scientific validation for this specific indication remains weak.
