Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pussy Ears (Cyanotis somaliensis) is not widely known in Western herbal medicine, but a related species, Cyanotis arachnoidea, and other members of the Cyanotis genus have a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in parts of Asia and Africa. In traditional systems, these plants have sometimes been employed to manage symptoms of colds and fevers, often attributed to their purported anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. However, the evidence supporting these uses is primarily anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical surveys rather than rigorous scientific studies.

There are limited laboratory studies on extracts from Cyanotis species, and these mainly focus on potential anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects in vitro or in animal models. However, such studies are scarce and do not directly address efficacy for treating colds with fever in humans. No clinical trials or strong pharmacological data specifically support the use of Pussy Ears for colds or fevers. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for using related plants for febrile illnesses, the evidence is weak and not substantiated by scientific research. Use for colds with fever should be regarded as traditional and not evidence-based.
