Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tayuya (Cayaponia tayuya) is a plant traditionally used in South American folk medicine, including in Brazil, where it has been employed for a variety of conditions such as rheumatism, inflammation, and respiratory complaints. Its use for colds, particularly those accompanied by fever, appears to be based primarily on traditional herbal medicine practices rather than robust scientific validation. Ethnobotanical records indicate that indigenous populations have utilized tayuya roots in decoctions or infusions to help manage symptoms associated with colds and fevers, likely due to its perceived anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects. Some phytochemical studies have identified cucurbitacins and other compounds in tayuya with potential anti-inflammatory properties, which could provide some rationale for its use in febrile illnesses. However, there are very limited clinical or preclinical studies directly evaluating tayuya’s efficacy or safety for treating colds or fever. As such, while the tradition of using tayuya for colds with fever is documented, there is insufficient scientific evidence to confirm its effectiveness or to clarify its mechanism of action for this specific indication.
