Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Agastache, particularly Agastache rugosa (Korean Mint or Huò Xiāng), has a long-standing use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for digestive complaints, including symptoms consistent with adult colic such as abdominal pain, bloating, and indigestion. The herb is a key ingredient in the TCM formula Huò Xiāng Zhèng Qì Sǎn, which is prescribed for gastrointestinal disturbances caused by 'dampness', manifesting as abdominal discomfort, nausea, and loose stools. Traditional texts describe its function as harmonizing the stomach, resolving dampness, and relieving pain. While there are anecdotal and historical accounts that support the use of Agastache for colic-like symptoms in adults, modern scientific studies directly investigating its effectiveness for adult colic are lacking. The herb does contain essential oils and flavonoids with demonstrated antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies, which could theoretically support its traditional uses. However, clinical trials confirming its efficacy for adult colic have not been published, so support for its use is primarily based on traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
