Evidence supporting the use of: Belleric myrobalan
For the health condition: Colic (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Belleric (Terminalia bellirica), also known as "Bibhitaki," has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems for a variety of digestive complaints, including colic in adults. The fruit is one of the three ingredients in the well-known Ayurvedic formulation "Triphala," which is used to support digestive health. Its traditional use for colic is related to its reputed carminative, mild laxative, and antispasmodic properties, believed to help ease abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort associated with colic.
However, scientific validation for Belleric's use specifically in adult colic is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated antispasmodic and gastroprotective effects of extracts from the fruit, direct clinical evidence in humans—especially in adults with colic—is lacking. Most references to its efficacy for colic are anecdotal or found in traditional medicine texts rather than peer-reviewed clinical trials. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains primarily traditional, and the strength of evidence is moderate at best, warranting further research to confirm efficacy and safety in this specific context.
