For the health condition: Colic (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Amomum (commonly referring to Amomum villosum or related species, known as Sha Ren in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has traditionally been used to address various digestive complaints, including symptoms akin to colic in adults. In the context of TCM, Sha Ren is believed to "move Qi," "warm the middle," and alleviate symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and distention, which may overlap with the Western concept of colic (abdominal discomfort due to gas or digestive upset). Historical TCM texts such as the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing and various materia medica describe its use for digestive stagnation and pain. However, while animal studies and limited in vitro research have shown that Amomum extracts may have antispasmodic and carminative effects, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for colic in adults is sparse and generally of low quality. Most modern clinical studies focus on broader gastrointestinal symptoms or specific syndromes rather than "colic" per se. Therefore, its use for this indication is primarily justified by tradition rather than robust clinical data.
