Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or purple nutsedge, has a long-standing use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani medicine, for the management of digestive disorders such as colic in adults. In these traditions, the rhizome of Cyperus rotundus is prescribed to alleviate abdominal pain, bloating, and cramping, which are symptoms characteristic of colic. The herb is believed to have carminative, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe the digestive tract and relieve discomfort.

However, modern scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Cyperus rotundus specifically for adult colic is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest antispasmodic and analgesic effects of its extracts, direct clinical trials in humans for colic are lacking. The few available studies tend to focus on its broad gastrointestinal effects, not specifically on colic. Thus, the primary justification for its use in this context remains traditional, with a moderate evidence rating due to the consistency of historical use but a lack of robust clinical validation.
