Evidence supporting the use of: Embelia ribes
For the health condition: Colic (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Embelia ribes, commonly known as Vidanga, has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine for the management of digestive disorders, including colic in adults. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention Vidanga among the remedies for "Shoola" (colic or abdominal pain), often attributing its efficacy to its carminative, anthelmintic, and digestive-stimulating properties. The seeds are typically incorporated into herbal formulations aimed at alleviating gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, and pain. However, while these uses are well-documented in traditional practice, scientific studies specifically addressing the efficacy of Embelia ribes for adult colic are limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that Embelia ribes exhibits antispasmodic and carminative effects, which could theoretically help in colic, but these are largely animal studies or in vitro experiments. There is a lack of robust clinical trials in human adults specifically for colic. Thus, the support for its use in colic primarily comes from traditional knowledge, with only low-level scientific evidence to supplement these claims.
