Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 1

Goldthread refers to several species in the genus Coptis, most commonly Coptis chinensis (Chinese goldthread). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), goldthread has been used for its bitter and cold properties to "clear heat" and "dry dampness." Historically, it has been used for a range of digestive complaints, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dysentery. While the term "colic" is not directly referenced in classical Chinese medical texts, the symptoms associated with colic—such as abdominal discomfort and cramping—could fall under the broader indications for which goldthread was used traditionally.

The primary active constituent of goldthread is berberine, which has demonstrated antimicrobial and antispasmodic effects in laboratory studies. However, there is a lack of modern clinical research specifically evaluating goldthread (or berberine) for the treatment of colic in adults. The historical use is therefore mainly based on traditional herbal practices rather than scientific validation. Accordingly, although goldthread has a long history of use for digestive complaints that may overlap with colic, there is insufficient scientific evidence to support its efficacy specifically for adult colic.
