Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Long Pepper (Piper longum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, where it is recommended for a variety of digestive complaints, including colic in adults. Ayurvedic texts describe Indian Long Pepper (pippali) as a remedy to stimulate digestion, reduce flatulence, and treat abdominal pain and discomfort—symptoms broadly associated with colic. The spice is frequently included in traditional formulations such as “Trikatu,” which is used to enhance gastrointestinal function and relieve digestive distress. However, scientific validation for its efficacy specifically in adult colic is limited. While some studies have investigated the effects of Piper longum extracts on gastrointestinal motility, most are preliminary, performed in vitro or in animal models, and focus on broader digestive effects rather than colic per se. The bioactive compounds, notably piperine, have demonstrated some anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic (muscle-relaxing) properties, which could theoretically support the traditional use, but human clinical trials are lacking. Thus, the use of Indian Long Pepper for adult colic is primarily justified by traditional practices with minimal scientific backing.
