Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plantain (Plantago major), commonly known as common or English plantain, has a long history of traditional use in European and folk medicine for a variety of gastrointestinal complaints, including colic in adults. The leaves have been used as an herbal remedy to soothe mucous membranes and reduce inflammation within the digestive tract. Traditional herbalists have prepared plantain as teas or infusions to help relieve stomach pains, indigestion, and spasmodic abdominal discomfort, which are symptoms often associated with colic. However, while these uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature and historical pharmacopeias, there is limited direct scientific research or clinical evidence specifically validating plantain's effectiveness for adult colic. Some laboratory studies have shown Plantago major extracts possess anti-inflammatory and mild antispasmodic properties, which could theoretically support its traditional application, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while the use of plantain for colic is justified by tradition and plausible pharmacological actions, the scientific evidence base remains weak, and further research would be needed to confirm efficacy and safety for this indication.
