Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sesbania, a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. There are records in Ayurveda and folk medicine suggesting the use of Sesbania species (such as Sesbania grandiflora) for digestive ailments, including colic in adults. The purported effects are attributed to the plant's anti-inflammatory and carminative properties, as well as its potential ability to relax intestinal muscles. However, the evidence supporting these uses is largely anecdotal and based on historical practice rather than controlled scientific studies.

There is currently little to no robust clinical research specifically evaluating the efficacy of Sesbania for the treatment of adult colic. Phytochemical analyses have identified compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and tannins in Sesbania species, which may have general gastrointestinal benefits, but direct evidence for colic treatment is lacking. Most references to its use for colic are found in ethnobotanical surveys or compilations of traditional remedies. Therefore, while Sesbania is recognized in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal complaints, its use for colic in adults is not scientifically validated, and evidence quality remains low.
