Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sickle Senna (Senna alexandrina, also known as Cassia angustifolia) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, primarily as a stimulant laxative due to its active compounds called sennosides. In historical herbal medicine systems, senna was occasionally used to relieve constipation-related discomforts, which could include symptoms that overlap with "colic" in adults—namely, abdominal pain and cramping caused by bowel irregularity. However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence or robust clinical trial data specifically supporting the use of sickle senna to treat or support colic in adults as a distinct condition. Most modern sources reference its use for short-term treatment of constipation only. The use of senna for colic is thus grounded in traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the overall quality of evidence is low. It is also important to note that senna can cause abdominal cramping as a side effect, which may worsen symptoms in some patients with colic rather than alleviate them. Therefore, while its use for colic may be found in traditional herbal references, it is not widely recommended in evidence-based medical practice for this purpose.
