Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vidanga (Embelia ribes) is an herb traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine, primarily recognized for its anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) effects. Its use in the context of colic, particularly in adults, is mainly justified by historical and ethnobotanical records, rather than robust scientific research. In Ayurvedic texts, Vidanga is often included in formulations to relieve abdominal discomfort, bloating, and colic pain, possibly due to its reputed carminative and digestive properties. These traditional uses are based on centuries-old empirical knowledge and the herb’s perceived ability to expel intestinal parasites, which can sometimes be a contributing factor to colicky pain.
However, modern scientific studies specifically investigating Vidanga’s efficacy for adult colic are limited. There is some indirect evidence from preclinical research suggesting that Vidanga may have antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically help soothe intestinal spasms associated with colic. Nevertheless, these findings are preliminary and not directly tied to clinical outcomes in adults with colic. Thus, the use of Vidanga for adult colic is primarily supported by traditional knowledge, with scientific validation remaining weak or absent at present.
