Evidence supporting the use of: Amomum subulatum
For the health condition: Colic (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amomum subulatum (black cardamom) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani, for various digestive complaints, including colic in children. The seeds and pods are often used as carminatives, believed to relieve flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and spasmodic pain. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its inclusion in remedies for pediatric colic, typically as part of polyherbal formulations rather than as a single agent. The proposed mechanism is related to its aromatic oils, which are thought to soothe the gastrointestinal tract and reduce spasms.
However, direct scientific evidence for the efficacy and safety of Amomum subulatum specifically in treating colic in children is limited. While some laboratory studies have indicated antispasmodic and carminative effects of cardamom species on gut smooth muscle, clinical trials in children are lacking. Most contemporary use is thus grounded in traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific validation. Due to the lack of robust clinical evidence, the evidence rating remains low (2/5), reflecting a reliance on historical precedent and anecdotal reports more than controlled trials.
