For the health condition: Colic (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Amomum, a genus that includes species such as Amomum villosum and Amomum subulatum (black cardamom), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, certain Amomum species—commonly referenced as Sha Ren—are used to "regulate Qi," dispel dampness, and address digestive complaints, including symptoms resembling colic in children (such as abdominal pain, bloating, and excessive crying thought to be due to digestive upset). In Ayurvedic medicine, similar uses are attributed to cardamom seeds, including relief of indigestion and flatulence.
However, there is very limited scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Amomum for colic in children. Most references to its use in colic are rooted in traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys, rather than controlled clinical studies. Modern clinical trials assessing efficacy and safety for pediatric colic are lacking. Thus, the use of Amomum for this condition is justified by tradition, with a low level of evidence (rated 1), primarily based on historical practice rather than robust scientific validation.
