Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Potentilla anserina (commonly known as Anserina or Silverweed) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, cramps, and colic in children. Historical sources, such as traditional herbal texts and folk medicine records, describe the use of Anserina preparations—typically as teas or infusions—to soothe intestinal discomfort and spasms. The presumed active components include tannins and flavonoids, which are thought to exert mild astringent and antispasmodic effects.

However, despite these longstanding traditional uses, there is minimal scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Anserina for treating colic in children. Modern clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies specifically addressing pediatric colic are lacking. The available evidence is mostly limited to in vitro or animal studies examining the plant’s general antispasmodic properties, not directly linked to clinical outcomes in children. Consequently, while Anserina’s use for colic is justified by tradition, current scientific validation is insufficient, and its use for this indication should be approached with caution, especially in infants and young children.
