Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema, a genus of plants in the Araceae family (commonly known as "jack-in-the-pulpit"), has been mentioned in various traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In some Ayurvedic texts, species such as Arisaema tortuosum (known as "Kand" or "Karkotaka") have been used in formulations addressing digestive complaints, including colic in children. However, these uses are rare and often accompanied by warnings about the plant's toxicity, as raw Arisaema contains calcium oxalate crystals and other irritants that can cause severe irritation and toxicity if not properly processed. The use of Arisaema preparations for pediatric colic is not widespread or well-documented in modern ethnobotanical literature, and its traditional use is generally overshadowed by safer and better-known herbal remedies.

There is a lack of scientific studies evaluating the efficacy or safety of Arisaema species for the treatment of colic in children. No clinical trials or pharmacological studies provide evidence for its use in this context. The evidence, therefore, is limited to historical mentions in traditional medical texts, and due to safety concerns, its use is not recommended in contemporary herbal practice for children. Safer alternatives are preferred.
