For the health condition: Colic (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asafoetida (Ferula asafoetida) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani, where it is employed as a remedy for digestive complaints, including colic in children. The resin is believed to act as a carminative, helping to expel gas and relieve abdominal discomfort. This traditional use is documented in classical Ayurvedic texts and continues in folk practices in India and some other regions. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for treating colic in children is limited. A few small studies and anecdotal reports suggest possible benefits, such as a study published in the "Indian Journal of Pediatrics" (1998) which found that asafoetida oil, when applied externally around the navel, might help reduce colic symptoms, but methodological limitations prevent strong conclusions. No large-scale, high-quality clinical trials have validated its effectiveness or established its safety for infants. Most of the support for using asafoetida in colic remains rooted in tradition rather than rigorous research. As with any remedy administered to children, especially infants, caution is advised due to possible risks of allergic reactions or toxicity. Consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended before use.
