Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as "Bibhitaki" in Ayurveda, has a longstanding traditional use in Indian medicine for a variety of digestive complaints, including colic in children. In Ayurvedic literature, preparations containing Belleric myrobalan are often recommended for their purported carminative, mild laxative, and digestive properties, which are believed to help relieve abdominal discomfort and flatulence—common symptoms of colic. Classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention its use for pediatric digestive ailments, and it is a component of the famous "Triphala" formulation, which is traditionally used to support gastrointestinal health. However, scientific evidence directly supporting the use of Belleric myrobalan for colic, especially in children, is lacking. Few clinical studies have investigated its efficacy for this specific indication, and most available research focuses on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and general gastrointestinal effects in adults or animal models. Thus, while its use is well established in traditional practices, there is insufficient modern scientific validation to strongly support its use for pediatric colic. Caution is advised when considering herbal remedies for infants, as safety and dosing are not well defined.
