Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a long history of traditional use for soothing digestive disturbances in infants, including colic. Historical sources and ethnobotanical records indicate that chamomile tea or extracts have been given to children to relieve symptoms such as fussiness, gas, and abdominal discomfort. The rationale is based on chamomile’s antispasmodic and calming properties, which are believed to help relax the gastrointestinal tract and reduce cramping. Some small clinical studies and herbal combination products (such as those containing chamomile with fennel and lemon balm) have shown a reduction in crying time among colicky infants, but the evidence specifically for chamomile alone is limited and not robust.

A 2005 randomized controlled trial using a herbal tea containing chamomile, fennel, and other herbs reported significant improvement in colic symptoms compared to placebo, but the specific contribution of chamomile could not be isolated. Additionally, safety concerns exist regarding the use of herbal teas in infants due to potential contamination and dosing issues. Major pediatric associations do not currently recommend chamomile for infant colic due to insufficient evidence and lack of standardized preparations. In summary, chamomile’s use for colic in children is primarily justified by tradition, with limited and low-quality scientific evidence.
