Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or "motha," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In these traditions, it is commonly employed to address gastrointestinal complaints, including abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and colic, particularly in children. The rhizome is believed to possess carminative, antispasmodic, and digestive properties, which are said to relieve intestinal spasms and flatulence—symptoms often associated with colic. In Ayurveda, Cyperus rotundus is an ingredient in various pediatric formulations aimed at soothing the digestive tract.

However, scientific validation for its efficacy specifically in childhood colic is limited. Some preclinical studies have demonstrated antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory activity in animal models, which supports the traditional rationale. Despite this, there are no robust clinical trials that confirm its safety or effectiveness for colic in children. The majority of its use for this purpose remains grounded in traditional practices and anecdotal evidence rather than modern scientific research. As such, while Cyperus rotundus is traditionally used to support or treat colic, further research is needed to substantiate these claims with high-quality clinical data.
