Evidence supporting the use of: Embelia ribes
For the health condition: Colic (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Embelia ribes, commonly known as Vidanga, has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly in India. In Ayurveda, it is considered a potent anthelmintic and carminative, and is traditionally used to treat various digestive complaints in children, including colic. Historical texts and Ayurvedic formulations often list Embelia ribes among the ingredients used to relieve abdominal pain, flatulence, and intestinal worms, all of which can contribute to colic symptoms in children. The rationale for its use is based on its purported ability to expel intestinal parasites, reduce bloating, and soothe gastrointestinal discomfort. However, modern scientific validation for its efficacy in pediatric colic is limited. Few animal studies have suggested antispasmodic and carminative properties, but robust clinical trials in children are lacking. Therefore, while the use of Embelia ribes for colic in children is well-rooted in tradition, current evidence from scientific research is insufficient to strongly support or refute its efficacy for this specific indication.
