Evidence supporting the use of: Portulaca
For the health condition: Colic (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Portulaca (commonly known as purslane) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for various ailments, including digestive complaints such as colic in children. Historical texts from traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda refer to Portulaca oleracea as a cooling and soothing herb, sometimes administered to ease stomach discomfort, cramps, or colic-like symptoms, though the documentation is often general and not specific to pediatric colic as defined in modern medicine. Despite its traditional use, scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy or safety of Portulaca for treating colic in children are lacking. There are limited animal studies suggesting some antispasmodic or anti-inflammatory properties, but these have not been translated into clinical trials for colic, especially in infants or children. Therefore, while the practice is justified by tradition, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is extremely limited and not robust by modern scientific standards. Caution should be exercised, particularly with pediatric use, due to a lack of safety and efficacy data.
