Astragalin is a natural flavonoid compound found in various plants, including Astragalus membranaceus and Kaempferia galanga. Recent scientific studies have investigated its potential therapeutic effects in experimental models of colitis, particularly ulcerative colitis. Preclinical research, primarily in animal models, has demonstrated that astragalin can ameliorate symptoms of colitis by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and epithelial cell damage in the colon. Key mechanisms identified include the inhibition of the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6), and enhancement of antioxidant defenses.
For example, a 2017 study published in "International Immunopharmacology" reported that astragalin administration significantly reduced disease activity index and histological damage in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. The study further highlighted astragalin’s ability to suppress key inflammatory mediators and oxidative markers.
However, despite these promising preclinical findings, there is currently a lack of human clinical trials evaluating astragalin for colitis. Its use is not well established in traditional medicine specifically for colitis, and its efficacy and safety in humans remain uncertain. Therefore, while scientific interest and mechanistic evidence exist, the overall strength of evidence supporting astragalin's use for colitis is limited and rated as 2 out of 5.
