Bacillus subtilis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential to support or treat colitis, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis. Scientific evidence supporting its use is moderate (rated 3/5), primarily based on preclinical and a few clinical studies.
Preclinical studies in animal models of colitis have shown that oral administration of B. subtilis can reduce inflammation, decrease levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-6), and support the restoration of intestinal barrier function. The mechanisms are thought to include modulation of the host immune response, competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, and enhancement of beneficial gut microbiota.
Some small human clinical trials and case reports have explored the adjunctive use of B. subtilis (often as part of multi-strain probiotics) in patients with ulcerative colitis, suggesting potential benefits in reducing symptoms and maintaining remission.
