Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium lactis is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential to support intestinal health, including conditions such as colitis. Scientific evidence for its use in colitis, particularly ulcerative colitis and other forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is moderate but promising. Several clinical trials and animal studies have indicated that B. lactis supplementation may help reduce inflammation, enhance gut barrier function, and modulate immune responses in the colon.

For example, preclinical studies in animal models of colitis have shown that B. lactis administration can decrease pro-inflammatory cytokine production and improve histological markers of colonic inflammation. In humans, some randomized controlled trials have explored the effect of multi-strain probiotics containing B. lactis (often alongside other probiotic species such as Lactobacilli) in patients with ulcerative colitis. These studies suggest a potential benefit in maintaining remission and reducing disease activity, although results are not always consistent and often the effect size is modest.

Mechanistically, B. lactis is thought to support colonic health by producing short-chain fatty acids (such as acetate), reinforcing mucosal integrity, and modulating immune cell activity. However, it is important to note that the majority of clinical evidence involves multi-strain preparations rather than isolated B. lactis, making it difficult to attribute benefits solely to this species. Overall, the scientific rationale for B. lactis in colitis is supported by moderate-quality evidence, but further large-scale, well-designed trials are needed to clarify its specific efficacy.
