Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb historically used for various gastrointestinal disorders, including colitis. Recent preclinical and limited clinical studies provide some scientific basis for its use in ulcerative colitis and other forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The primary active compound, berberine, exhibits notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Experimental studies in animal models of colitis have demonstrated that Coptis chinensis extracts and berberine can reduce inflammation, downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β), and improve histopathological outcomes in the colon.

Some small-scale clinical trials and case reports suggest symptomatic improvement in patients with ulcerative colitis or chronic diarrhea when using formulations containing Coptis chinensis or berberine. However, large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials are still lacking. The mechanism of action appears to involve modulation of the gut microbiota, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, and inhibition of key inflammatory signaling pathways (notably NF-κB). Safety data are generally favorable at recommended doses, though gastrointestinal side effects can occur.
