Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Colitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is traditionally used in various cultures for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits. In recent years, scientific studies have investigated its potential role in supporting the management of colitis, particularly ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Experimental research, primarily in animal models, suggests that ginger extract can reduce colonic inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue damage. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-1β), suppression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) activation, and enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activities. For example, a 2016 study in rats with acetic acid-induced colitis demonstrated that ginger extract significantly decreased colonic inflammation and improved histological scores compared to controls.
However, human clinical trial data are limited. A small randomized controlled trial published in 2019 found that ginger supplementation (3g/day for 12 weeks) in patients with ulcerative colitis led to modest improvements in inflammatory markers and quality of life compared to placebo, but the sample size was small and the effect size was modest. Overall, while preclinical data are promising and support the rationale for use, robust human evidence is lacking. Thus, ginger’s use for colitis is justified by emerging scientific evidence but remains preliminary, warranting a moderate-low evidence rating.
