Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glycomacropeptide (GMP) is a bioactive peptide derived from casein in milk during cheese production. There is some scientific evidence supporting its use to help manage colitis, particularly in preclinical animal models. Several studies in rodents with chemically induced colitis (such as DSS-induced colitis in mice) have demonstrated that GMP supplementation can reduce inflammation, improve gut barrier function, and modulate the gut microbiota. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (like TNF-α and IL-6), enhancement of anti-inflammatory cytokine production, and promotion of beneficial bacterial populations (e.g., Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus).

However, the majority of supporting evidence comes from animal studies and in vitro experiments. Human clinical data is scarce, with only limited pilot studies or indirect evidence suggesting potential benefit. No large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials in humans with colitis (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) have been published as of mid-2024. Therefore, while the scientific rationale and preclinical results are promising, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is still limited.

In conclusion, glycomacropeptide is being studied for its anti-inflammatory and gut-protective effects in colitis, but its use is not yet well-established in clinical practice due to insufficient human data. More research, especially in humans, is needed to confirm efficacy and safety for this condition.
