Evidence supporting the use of: Guava
For the health condition: Colitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Guava (Psidium guajava) leaves and fruits have been traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in tropical regions, for the management of gastrointestinal disorders, including colitis. Folk medicine practices, especially in parts of Asia and Latin America, have employed guava leaf decoctions to alleviate symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and inflammation associated with colitis and related digestive ailments. The rationale for this use is largely based on the plant’s demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties in traditional herbal medicine.
Scientific studies specifically investigating guava for the treatment of colitis in humans are limited. Some preclinical research (in vitro and animal studies) has suggested that guava leaf extracts may reduce intestinal inflammation, likely due to their high content of flavonoids, tannins, and other polyphenolic compounds. These compounds have shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically benefit colitis. However, well-designed clinical trials in humans are lacking, and existing evidence is insufficient to establish efficacy or recommend guava as a primary treatment for colitis.
In summary, the use of guava for colitis is primarily supported by traditional use, with modest preclinical scientific basis but little to no robust clinical evidence. Its use should be considered complementary, and not as a replacement for evidence-based medical therapies.
