Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus gasseri is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating colitis, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) forms like ulcerative colitis. The evidence for its efficacy is limited but present, primarily stemming from animal studies and a small number of clinical trials. In preclinical models, L. gasseri has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory effects, modulate gut microbiota composition, and promote mucosal healing. These effects are hypothesized to result from the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), enhancement of the mucosal barrier, and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

A handful of human studies and randomized controlled trials have explored the use of L. gasseri in gastrointestinal disorders, but most research focuses on general gut health, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or metabolic conditions. Evidence specifically relating to colitis is sparse. One small-scale clinical trial suggested that L. gasseri supplementation may help reduce disease activity in patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis, but sample sizes are limited and results have not been widely replicated. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of probiotics in IBD often include L. gasseri within multi-strain formulations, making it difficult to attribute benefits to this strain alone.

In summary, while there is some early scientific evidence supporting the use of L. gasseri for colitis, the strength of this evidence is currently low (rated 2 out of 5). More well-powered, high-quality clinical trials are required to determine its efficacy and safety in this context.
