Phlorotannins are polyphenolic compounds found exclusively in brown seaweeds. Scientific interest in their potential to support or treat colitis stems from their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties observed in preclinical studies. Several in vivo studies, primarily in rodent models of colitis (such as dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in mice), have demonstrated that phlorotannins can attenuate colonic inflammation. These effects are thought to be mediated by modulation of inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β), reduction of oxidative stress markers, and inhibition of key signaling pathways like NF-κB and MAPK. Additionally, phlorotannins have shown potential in improving gut barrier function and modulating the gut microbiota, both of which are relevant to colitis pathology.

Despite these promising findings, clinical evidence in humans is currently lacking. The majority of research is preclinical, and there are no large-scale randomized controlled trials confirming efficacy or safety in patients with colitis. As such, while there are scientific data suggesting potential benefits, the evidence remains preliminary and is not yet sufficient to recommend phlorotannins as a treatment for colitis outside of experimental contexts. Therefore, the strength of evidence supporting its use is rated as 2 out of 5.
