Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus pluricaulis, commonly known as Shankhpushpi, has a longstanding history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for enhancing cognitive function, including improving concentration and memory. Classical Ayurvedic texts frequently describe Shankhpushpi as a "medhya rasayana" — a rejuvenative herb for the mind, believed to calm the nervous system and promote mental clarity. Preparations using this plant are often recommended for conditions such as poor memory, mental fatigue, and difficulty focusing.

Scientific validation, however, is limited. Some preclinical studies in animal models suggest that extracts of Convolvulus pluricaulis may possess neuroprotective, anxiolytic, and nootropic effects, potentially mediated through antioxidant activity and cholinergic modulation. For instance, certain rodent studies have shown improved performance on learning and memory tasks following administration of the herb. Nonetheless, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the existing evidence does not conclusively demonstrate efficacy for treating poor concentration.

In summary, the use of Convolvulus pluricaulis for supporting concentration is primarily rooted in traditional practice, with limited but suggestive animal data and very weak human evidence. Thus, its use is justified by tradition, with an evidence rating of 2 out of 5.
