Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Panax ginseng has a long history in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia, for enhancing mental and physical vitality. In recent decades, scientific studies have investigated its potential cognitive benefits, including effects on concentration and mental performance. Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials have explored the impact of Panax ginseng extracts on cognitive function in healthy adults and in populations with cognitive impairment. Some studies have demonstrated small but statistically significant improvements in aspects of cognitive performance, such as attention and working memory, following short-term supplementation with standardized ginseng extracts. Proposed mechanisms include ginsenosides' effects on neurotransmitter regulation, antioxidant activity, and modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. However, the clinical evidence is mixed. While some trials report positive outcomes in concentration and mental fatigue, others find little to no effect compared to placebo. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that Panax ginseng may offer modest, short-term improvements in cognitive performance, but that the overall quality of evidence is moderate due to variability in study design, ginseng preparations, dosages, and outcome measures. Hence, while there is scientific research suggesting Panax ginseng can support concentration, the effects are generally considered mild and more research is needed to confirm long-term efficacy and safety.
