Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hericium mushroom (also known as Lion’s Mane, Hericium erinaceus) is increasingly studied for its potential cognitive benefits, including support for concentration and memory. Several preclinical studies and a small number of human clinical trials have explored its effects on cognitive function. The mushroom contains compounds such as hericenones and erinacines, which are believed to stimulate the synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that supports the growth and maintenance of neurons.

Some double-blind, placebo-controlled trials in older adults with mild cognitive impairment have reported modest improvements in cognitive performance, including aspects of attention and concentration, after daily supplementation with Hericium extracts for several weeks. For example, a 2009 study by Mori et al. in Japan found that elderly subjects who consumed Lion’s Mane for 16 weeks showed improved cognitive scores compared to placebo, though the effects diminished after discontinuation.

However, the overall quality and size of human studies are limited, with small sample sizes and short durations. While animal studies provide mechanistic insights, rigorous large-scale clinical trials are lacking. Thus, while preliminary scientific evidence suggests a possible benefit of Hericium mushroom for poor concentration, the level of support remains modest, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
