Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), also known as Bibhitaki, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for respiratory complaints, including congestion. In Ayurveda, Belleric myrobalan is one of the three fruits in the famous Triphala formulation, and is believed to help balance the body's doshas, clear excess mucus, and support respiratory health. Traditional texts describe its use as an expectorant and for relieving coughs, throat ailments, and chest congestion.

However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for congestion is primarily anecdotal and based on traditional use rather than rigorous scientific studies. While some laboratory and animal studies suggest that Belleric myrobalan possesses anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, direct clinical trials in humans specifically investigating its effect on congestion are lacking. Thus, while it is justified by traditional use, the scientific evidence remains limited and warrants further research.
