Evidence supporting the use of: Cajuput
For the health condition: Congestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi) essential oil has been traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in Southeast Asia, to relieve symptoms of respiratory congestion. The oil, extracted from the leaves and twigs of the cajeput tree, contains compounds such as cineole (also known as eucalyptol), which is known for its expectorant properties. Historical records indicate its use in folk medicine as an inhalant or topical application (often as part of balms or rubs) to help clear nasal passages and ease breathing difficulties associated with colds, coughs, and bronchitis.
While the traditional use is well documented, scientific evidence supporting cajeput oil specifically for congestion is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies on cineole—the main constituent—suggest it may have mucolytic (mucus-thinning), anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically help with respiratory symptoms. However, most clinical studies investigating these effects have focused on related oils like eucalyptus rather than cajeput itself. Therefore, while the rationale for its use is plausible based on its chemical constituents and traditional applications, robust human clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy for congestion are lacking. As such, cajeput oil’s use for congestion remains rooted in tradition, with only modest scientific support extrapolated from its components and related oils.
