Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Orange essential oil has a long history of use in traditional aromatherapy for respiratory complaints, including congestion. In folk medicine, citrus oils like sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) have been inhaled or used in steam therapy to help clear nasal passages, likely due to their refreshing scent and perceived ability to "open" airways. However, scientific evidence supporting the use of orange essential oil specifically for congestion is limited. Some small studies and in vitro research suggest that orange oil components, such as limonene, possess mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which may theoretically benefit respiratory health. Nonetheless, these findings do not directly demonstrate effectiveness in relieving congestion in humans. Most authoritative sources and clinical guidelines do not recognize orange essential oil as a proven treatment for congestion, and its use remains primarily rooted in traditional practice and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation. As such, while orange essential oil continues to be used by some in aromatherapy for congestion relief, this is largely based on tradition rather than strong scientific evidence.
